One can spend more time researching a particular subject and there are not as many other students around, so the professor would be able to spend some extra time with the student if needed. In one sense, the summer classes are more intense because they contain the same amount of information crammed into a shorter time period; but on the other hand, one can concentrate fully on the one class and can learn more from completing extra research.
