Colleges and Universities

Colleges by definition are institutions of higher learning that grant a bachelor's degree in liberal arts or science or both. Universities by definition are institutions for higher learning with teaching and research facilities that award a bachelor's degree in liberal arts or science but they also sustain graduate schools and professional schools that award master's degrees and doctorates as well.

All colleges and universities have a board of trustees; a president, chancellor, at least one vice president, vice-chancellor, and deans of various disciplines. The colleges and universities are generally divided into a number of academic departments, schools or faculties. There are public university systems and private university systems.

The public are run by state government higher education boards. They review financial requests and budget proposals and then allocate funds for each university in the state system. They also approve new programs of instruction and cancel or make changes in existing programs. In addition, they plan for the further coordinated growth and development of the various institutions of higher education in that state.

The private colleges and universities also have board that make decisions regarding finances, instruction, and growth. Unlike the public colleges and universities, the private set their own tuition cost and rely on endowments from rich individuals and companies.

The colleges and universities here in the United States are usually among the foremost research and advanced training providers. Most colleges and universities not only offer courses in subjects ranging from the natural sciences, engineering, architecture or medicine, to sports sciences, social sciences, law or humanities, they also offer many amenities to their students that include a variety of dining options, bank needs, bookshops, print shops, job centers, and bars. In addition, colleges and universities have facilities like libraries, sports centers, students' unions, computer labs, and research laboratories. Colleges and universities are so diversified that they offer something for everyone who is interested in attending.
